The Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, and Memphis Grizzlies have finalized a three-team trade. The Celtics acquired center Kristaps Porzingis, while the Grizzlies received guard Marcus Smart. The Wizards obtained guard Tyus Jones as part of the deal. In exchange, Memphis sent its 2023 first-round pick (25th overall) and the Golden State Warriors’ top-four-protected 2024 first-round pick to Boston. The Celtics also sent the 35th pick in the 2023 draft to Washington, along with forwards Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala. Porzingis, having opted in to his $36 million player option for the 2023-24 season, will join the Celtics.
The trade marked a significant change for the Celtics, who are aiming to reshape their team for the upcoming season. Porzingis, who had a standout year with the Wizards, will provide an offensive boost alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. In addition to Porzingis, the Celtics acquired two first-round draft picks.
For the Grizzlies, Smart brings valuable qualities, such as defensive prowess and versatility, to the team. He will be a key player as they seek to rebound from last season’s first-round playoff exit. Smart’s playmaking abilities make him a suitable replacement for the suspended Ja Morant at the starting point guard position for the first 25 games of the season.
Meanwhile, Tyus Jones will take on the role of the starting point guard for the Wizards. The team has been actively restructuring its roster under the leadership of new president of basketball operations, Michael Winger. This trade follows the recent blockbuster deal that sent Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns.
Additionally, it was announced that Washington forward Kyle Kuzma declined his player option and will become an unrestricted free agent, adding further intrigue to the upcoming free agency period.
